There’s a huge difference between being believable when performing for an audience from a stage and when acting for the camera. Develop your skills for effectively communicating through the lens. In upcoming workshops, students will perform for the camera, watch their work played back, take direction and do multiple takes. You’ll be able to watch yourself improve during the class. Experience the audition process; learn what’s expected of you, so you can overcome the tension and nerves of uncertainty and gain the confidence and clarity of focus that comes with knowing what to do and how to do it. Learn how to “act” in an audition from the minute you arrive in the parking lot until you drive out of sight afterwards. Practice interacting with the camera, with other actors, and the casting director. You’ll watch your chances for being cast improve during the course. Even if you have taken this class before, you will have the chance to advance to different scripts and copy. All talent will work at their own pace.

Local Indie Filmmaker to Present at Patrick Henry
Virginia independent filmmaker John Francis Black II will be screening his 16-minute short film, Lustig, at Patrick Henry College in Purcellville VA this Monday, May 5th, at 7:30 p.m. Following the film, which recently won first place in the “shorts” category of the Virginia Independent Film Festival, Black will present to the audience on the process of making independent film in Virginia and on his own experience with Lustig.
Lustig is a tale of self-sacrificial heroism told by a coward, based on a true story of events in a Nazi concentration camp toward the end of World War II. The film stands alone as an inspiring story, but it also demonstrates the possibilities of independent filmmaking on a shoestring budget—and with donations of uniforms from the Holocaust Museum in D.C.
The community is invited to this event. Please RSVP to Sarah Pride at sepride@phc.edu if you expect to attend. Visit www.phc.edu for driving directions to the College.

New York Foundation for the Arts proudly presents the 2008 ACE Film Festival
Calling All Filmmakers!
Have you ever dreamed of showing your film on the big screen in New York City? Well, here is your chance. New York Foundation for the Arts -- which has bolstered the careers of many well-known filmmakers such as Spike Lee, Tamara Jenkins and Todd Haynes -- is proud to announce that it is now accepting applications for the second annual ACE Film Festival (September 12-14, 2008), the only such festival in the city's Midtown area. NYFA, presenter of the ACE Film Festival, encourages all filmmakers to submit applications for review. This could be the opportunity you've been waiting for -- to have your film seen by industry professionals, distributors, moviegoers and fellow filmmakers, and right in the heart of Manhattan. Selected films will be reviewed by an impressive panel of accomplished judges for a chance to win prizes, cash, and more.
Submit Your Film
For complete application information about how to submit your film, please click here. The upcoming Late Deadline is May 9, 2008.
About ACE Film Festival
Founded in 2006, the ACE Film Festival provides an exclusive forum for domestic film and video magnifying the focus on this country's creative voice. For further information, please visit ACE Film Festival's web site.
About NYFA
NYFA offers a wide variety of programs serving filmmakers, including Fiscal Sponsorship, Artists' Fellowships, and NYFA Source. For a complete list of NYFA's programs, please see our For Artists page.
Some of the countless filmmakers NYFA has supported through unrestricted grants and fiscal sponsorship over the past thirty years include Zana Briski, Maryann De Leo, Todd Haynes, Reginald Hudlin, Tamara Jenkins, Nathaniel Kahn, Barbara Kopple, Spike Lee, Mira Nair, Kimberly Peirce, Yvonne Rainer, and Julie Taymor.
Said Todd Haynes: "At a time in my life when reputation or experience would have excluded me outright, the grant NYFA awarded me allowed me to pay the lab costs for the film I'd just finished, a film shot entirely with dolls called Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story. As a result of that film's reception, I was eventually able to make my first feature, Poison, a film inspired by the writings of Jean Genet which NYFA would once again support. (These people weren't afraid of anything!) In many ways I owe whatever career I've had as a filmmaker to these fundamental acts of support. They not only helped pay the bills, they helped to protect the work of an emerging artist at a time when concerns of the market or career can surely crush the best in us."
NYFA has supported emerging filmmakers since 1976. The ACE Film Festival marks NYFA's first time as presenter of a film festival.

A Call for Entries
from John Romeo, producer and host
of the online show called
"The Romeo Theater"
http://www.romeo-theater.com
Each show presents a short movie, and afterward the director shares a little bit about the story behind it.
The Romeo Theater originates in Richmond, VA, but independent filmmakers from all over the country have presented their work on the show, now in its third year. It's a great promotional tool because it introduces these films to a worldwide audience. It's also available as a video podcast, and is part of the YouTube Partners program.
"The Romeo Theater" is always seeking new films to feature on the show,
but the films must meet these requirements:
Under 5 minutes, no copyright infringements, in the general 'PG' range.
Then the director gets to create a 1-2 minute "making of" segment that follows the film, explaining a little about how it was made or where the idea came from, usually incorporating behind-the-scenes footage.
If you would like to promote your film on The Romeo Theater,
please visit the website <http://www.romeo-theater.com>
and click the "Submissions" link on the right.
That page will tell you about the simple (and free) submission process.
Feel free to contact John Romeo with any questions:
